AI4MedImaging and the EIC Accelerator: Heart MRI Read by AI
Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging is used to assess the heart's structure and function, and reading it takes specialists. AI4MedImaging's EIC report put the number of cardiac MRI experts at 0.06 to 3 per million Europeans and cited 85% variability between readers. The Braga company, founded in 2019, sells AI4CMR, software that segments the heart and measures its volumes, mass and ejection fraction automatically.
The European Innovation Council granted €1,753,842 towards a €2.5 million project from September 2022 to February 2025 to launch a fuller product, AI4CMR.Plus, by 2025. The final report lists improved analysis of heart motion, automatic segmentation and classification of fibrosis, approval from Saudi Arabia's regulator, and an EU and US patent. On 11 February 2026 the FDA cleared AI4CMR version 2.0, according to its 510(k) database. The company publishes no sales or customer numbers.

Where AI4MedImaging Stands Now
AI4CMR is sold through other companies' platforms. In August 2023 Blackford added it to its imaging AI platform, according to Imaging Technology News, and in June 2024 aycan became a reseller in the US and Germany. In 2025 it announced a partnership with Ligence and work with Intel on faster analysis. Portugal's Iberinform lists 16 to 20 employees and annual sales in a band up to €2 million.
The record
Cleared in Europe, the US and Saudi Arabia
AI4MedImaging had a first version on the EU market before the EIC award. The project added fibrosis analysis and new approvals; version 2.0 won FDA clearance in February 2026.

"aycan is a highly capable and value-added technology and reseller partner."
Vitor Hugo Pereira, CMO, AI4MedImaging, June 2024The Technology: Zero-Click Heart Measurements
AI4CMR analyses the cine sequences of a cardiac MRI to outline the chambers and calculate standard measurements without manual tracing. The EIC project added a multi-class, segmental approach to motion analysis and late gadolinium enhancement analysis, which the report says can automatically segment, quantify and classify fibrosis. The report does not publish accuracy figures against expert readers.
The problem
The cost of heart disease the project cited
EU costs of cardiovascular disease in 2017, in € billions, as cited by the EIC report to justify automated reading of cardiac MRI.
CORDIS project 190149120, final report.
What the EIC Project Promised, and What CORDIS Shows
The EIC project
The EU paid 70% of a €2.5M project
AI4CMR ran from September 2022 to February 2025. The award was grant only.
CORDIS project 190149120. Values in € millions.
The project promised the market launch of AI4CMR.Plus by 2025 and commercial expansion. It delivered new analysis features, regulatory approvals and a patent for "Artificial Intelligence Cardiac Motion Classification". The FDA received the version 2.0 submission in July 2025 and cleared it in February 2026, a year later than the target. CORDIS still lists the project as signed.

The approvals
Days from FDA submission to clearance
Both AI4CMR versions were cleared as substantially equivalent to existing devices. Version 2.0 was submitted four months after the EIC project ended.
FDA 510(k) database: K220624 and K252084.
The Money
AI4MedImaging has announced no equity round. Caplight lists Pathena as an early investor, alongside grants from the EIC and Portugal 2020. Its share capital is €1.70 million. The EIC award was grant only.
What Cannot Be Checked
Questions for the EIC
How many hospitals pay for AI4CMR, the company's actual revenue and losses, and how its measurements compare with expert readers in a published study are not public.
Why Europe Should Care
The EIC funded a small Portuguese imaging AI company. According to its report it delivered the upgrades, and it has approvals on three continents. Whether that becomes a sustainable business depends on sales it does not disclose.
What the project promised
A fully automated cardiac MRI reporting product on the market by 2025, and commercial growth.
What the record shows
New features, Saudi approval, an FDA clearance in February 2026, reseller deals and no published sales.
The Verdict
Built and cleared, scale unknown
According to its final report and the FDA database, AI4MedImaging delivered what the EIC grant paid for, only a little late. The company remains small, and nothing public shows how many cardiologists rely on its software.
