Aindo's EIC Accelerator Makes Fake Patient Data That Works

21 October 20261,031 words6 min

Medical AI needs patient records, and patient records are the data European institutions are least able to share. Aindo, founded in Trieste in 2018 as a spin-off of the advanced studies school SISSA and based at Area Science Park, generates synthetic datasets instead: artificial records that reproduce the statistical structure of real ones without containing anyone's personal data. Its platform is called SyDAi, and the US National Institute of Standards and Technology recognised it as best in class for optimising the privacy-fidelity trade-off, according to the CORDIS summary.

The EIC Accelerator selected the project, SydAi, at its October 2024 cut-off for blended finance, and CORDIS records a grant of €2,080,085.71 from April 2025 to March 2027 to scale the platform. The project frames the problem in money, citing a potential €14.03 trillion addition to global GDP from AI by 2030 and poor data quality affecting up to 80% of AI projects.

Private capital, then public

In October 2023 Aindo closed a €6 million Series A led by United Ventures with existing investor Vertis SGR, to hire about ten people and build tools for healthcare, finance and public administration, Area Science Park announced. Its own grants page lists the public money on top: the EIC award, a €249,921 regional proof-of-concept grant for a platform called SynthIA, a €40,437 grant for IT equipment, and earlier regional funding including a generative fashion-image project.

On the EIC award the company is precise about the odds: one of 71 companies selected from 1,211 applicants across Europe, and one of only three from Italy.

From generic synthetic data to healthcare

Aindo has narrowed its public positioning sharply toward health. Its website now leads with turning siloed healthcare data into clinical evidence and training vertical language models on clinical-grade data, with four offerings: planning and performance analysis for public health systems, synthetic cohorts for real-world evidence, synthetic control arms to reduce recruitment in clinical trials, and clinical language models. The compliance claims are as prominent as the technology: GDPR-ready, ready for the European Health Data Space, AI Act compliant, Europrivacy certified, ISO 27001.

Its published numbers are modest and specific: a 7.1% gain in sensitivity for models trained with its data, and access and study setup times going "from months to instant". The case studies and whitepapers are dated from March 2025 to September 2026, the most recent on predicting missing clinical follow-ups with AI-generated synthetic data. No customer is named in them.

The EIC project runs from April 2025 to March 2027, the earliest start of this cut-off's Italian awards. CORDIS has published no periodic report.

The plan

A synthetic data platform that avoids the biases of the original data, copies complex relational databases and respects deterministic rules, scaled into privacy-critical sectors.

The record so far

A NIST citation, four ISO and privacy certifications, a partnership with IQVIA Italy and a ministerial endorsement; no named customer, no revenue and no published benchmark of the platform's own output.

Building the Italian health data argument

Rather than announcing customers, Aindo has spent 2025 and 2026 building the policy case for its product. It supported a report by The European House Ambrosetti with Novartis Italia on a "Synthetic Health Data Hub" in Friuli Venezia Giulia, convened meetings on AI and health in Milan under the patronage of the Lombardy region and in Rome, and joined AICROplus, the Italian clinical research organisation association. Italy's health minister Orazio Schillaci is quoted on its site on building a secure and interoperable health data ecosystem, and the researcher Davide Cirillo is quoted warning that synthetic data's potential depends on governance, transparency and regulatory clarity evolving with it.

In April 2026 it signed a strategic partnership with IQVIA Italy to scale synthetic health data adoption in the Italian healthcare system, the most commercially significant item it has announced since the Series A.

Funding

A €6M Series A and a stack of public grants

Aindo lists several regional and national grants alongside the EIC award; the SynthIA proof-of-concept grant is the largest of them.

Aindo grants page; CORDIS; Area Science Park, 19 October 2023. Values in € millions.

A product that exists because of European law

Aindo's market is created by regulation: GDPR limits what can be shared, the European Health Data Space will define how health data moves, and the AI Act adds documentation duties. Synthetic data is one of the few answers that lets institutions collaborate without moving patient records, which is why the company's certifications occupy as much of its homepage as its technology. The EIC grant backs a European tool for a European legal problem, and the company has kept its lobbying and standard-setting work in Italy, where the first customers would be public health systems.

Verdict

Aindo has a real product, a NIST citation reported in its CORDIS summary, certifications that matter to hospital buyers, and a partnership with the largest clinical data company in the market it is targeting. What is still missing after 18 months of the grant is evidence of use: no named customer, no revenue, no deployment case study and no periodic report. Six months remain.
