Apmonia and the EIC Accelerator: Reprogramming the Tumour Matrix

30 September 2026871 words5 min

Apmonia Therapeutics, registered in Reims in 2019 and led by chief executive Albin Jeanne, develops peptide drugs that target the extracellular matrix, the dense protein scaffold solid tumours build around themselves to thrive and evade treatment, using computational modelling and lab validation. Its EIC Accelerator project, ACT-MATRIX, receives an EU contribution of €2,434,790 and runs from January 2025 to June 2027, according to CORDIS. When the award was announced in July 2024, Apmonia said it would receive up to €9.5 million: a €2.5 million grant mainly for its first clinical trial and a €7 million equity commitment through the EIC Fund, and that it was building a syndicate for a new round, according to Apmonia.

Its lead drug, TAX2, is a cyclic peptide of 12 amino acids that blocks the interaction between thrombospondin-1 and CD47, which Apmonia says reprogrammes tumours towards a less blood-vessel-rich state and restores immune activity, while sparing the CD47-SIRPα pathway whose blockade by other drugs causes blood toxicity. The EU's CTIS register shows the first-in-human Phase 1/2a trial, APM-CT001, authorised in France and Belgium in February 2026 for 48 patients with advanced ovarian, colorectal or pancreatic cancer or melanoma, according to CTIS. The US registry lists a start in October 2026 and "not yet recruiting", according to ClinicalTrials.gov. No periodic report is yet public on CORDIS.

Where Apmonia Stands Now

In February 2026 Apmonia announced €10 million of financing from existing investors Capital Grand-Est, FINOVAM Gestion, the Fournier-Majoie Foundation and Angels Santé, alongside new private investors and Capital Cell, to start the TAX2 trial and expand its platform, according to Apmonia. The announcement does not mention the EIC Fund. It opened an R&D subsidiary in Liège in August 2025 and appointed two independent board members. Its accounts are not in the public INPI dataset.

The record

From tumour matrix research to a first-in-human trial

Apmonia's TAX2 trial was authorised in France and Belgium in February 2026 and is planned to start in October 2026. The EIC Fund is not named among the investors in its 2026 financing.

"This financing is a pivotal step as we bring TAX2 into first-in-human development."

The Technology: Targeting the Tumour's Scaffold

Apmonia targets the protective matrix around tumours rather than only the cancer cells. It says TAX2's selectivity is designed to avoid the haematological toxicities associated with systemic CD47 blockade, by acting only on the thrombospondin-1 interaction.

What the EIC Award Promised, and What the Record Shows

The project runs to June 2027, so it is too early to judge it. The grant was meant mostly for the first clinical trial, and that trial has been authorised, which is the concrete milestone. Dosing of the first patient has not yet been announced.

The Money

The EIC announced €7 million of equity for Apmonia in 2024, dedicated to other pipeline assets and platform growth. The €10 million round that followed in 2026 lists regional funds, a foundation, angels, new private investors and Capital Cell, but not the EIC Fund. Whether the EIC equity was invested separately, is pending, or lapsed is not public.

The money

EIC commitments and the 2026 financing, € millions

The EIC announced a €2.5 million grant and a €7 million equity commitment in 2024. Apmonia's €10 million financing in February 2026 named existing and new investors but not the EIC Fund.

What Cannot Be Checked

Questions for the EIC

Whether the €7 million EIC equity commitment has been invested, under what conditions, and when the first TAX2 patient will be dosed are not public.

Why Europe Should Care

Apmonia calls ovarian cancer, its first clinical target, one of the deadliest cancers, and a new drug class aimed at the tumour environment would add options. Apmonia runs its first trial in France and Belgium and built R&D in both countries, keeping the work in Europe.

What the award promised

Clinical development of matrix-targeting peptides, backed by €7 million of EIC equity.

What the record shows

Trial authorised, €10 million raised, EIC equity not visible.

The Verdict

Trial ready, EIC equity unclear

Apmonia has reached the clinic's door. Whether the EIC delivered the equity it announced is not on the record.
