Augmedit and the EIC Accelerator: Holograms Cleared for Surgery
Augmedit, based in Naarden in the Netherlands, makes software that converts 2D medical scans into 3D holograms that a surgeon sees in augmented reality, overlaid on the patient with a planned surgical path. Its EIC project said augmented reality was not yet used in neurosurgery "due to lacking accuracy and automatization of workflows", and set out to make its Lumi platform standard in the field, according to CORDIS.
The European Innovation Council granted €1,716,743 towards a €2.45 million project from January 2023 to May 2025. The final report says Augmedit delivered a market-ready platform at TRL 8, completed a multi-centre randomised phantom study showing AR guidance beat the freehand technique for placing brain drains, completed a clinical study showing registration accuracy non-inferior to standard neuronavigation, obtained a US patent and completed a health technology assessment. Its LumiNE US planning software received FDA 510(k) clearance in September 2024, and LumiNE Elite, for use during surgery, received a CE mark in January 2026.

Where Augmedit Stands Now
In June 2025 Augmedit announced the first closing of a Series A led by Egeria Impact Investments and joined by the EIC Fund, according to its news page; the amount was not given there. Its randomised phantom study was published in Acta Neurochirurgica in December 2025, and further clinical papers with its technology appeared in 2025 and 2026. LumiNE Elite projects a planned trajectory onto the patient for external ventricular drain placement. Augmedit has not named hospitals using its products commercially.
The record

"With LumiNE Elite, we have created a solution shaped by real-world surgical needs and truly purpose-built for neurosurgeons."

The software segments anatomy from scans with AI, builds a 3D hologram in the cloud and registers it to the patient so the surgeon sees it in place. The report says this removes the need for surgeons to look away at navigation screens during delicate work. Its clinical accuracy study found registration non-inferior to current gold-standard navigation systems.

What the EIC Project Promised, and What CORDIS Shows

GUIDANCE 3D ran from January 2023 to May 2025. CORDIS still lists it as signed.

The project promised to finalise, validate and bring to market an AR guidance platform for neurosurgery. The report and public records show both regulatory clearances, two studies, a patent and security certifications. What is not shown is uptake: no customer numbers or revenue are published. CORDIS still lists the project as signed.

The Money
The EIC award was grant first, and the EIC Fund later joined Augmedit's Series A. Neither the round size nor the EIC Fund's share has been published on the company's site. Augmedit has not published its revenue.
The pitch
The medical-error case Augmedit put to the EIC
EU figures per year as cited in the report, in thousands. The report says about 20% are caused by surgical errors. These are company-cited estimates, not Augmedit results.

What Cannot Be Checked
Questions for the EIC
How much the EIC Fund invested, how large the Series A is, how many hospitals use LumiNE and what Augmedit earns are not public.
Why Europe Should Care
The report cites estimates that preventable medical errors cause about 95,000 deaths a year in the EU, some of them in surgery. Augmedit is a European company that took AR surgical software through both US and EU regulators with EIC support. Whether it improves outcomes in real operations is the next test.
What the project promised
A validated, market-ready augmented reality guidance platform for neurosurgery.
What the record shows
FDA clearance, a CE mark, published studies and a Series A with the EIC Fund; no sales figures.
The Verdict
Cleared and funded
Augmedit delivered what its EIC project set out to do and attracted follow-on investment. The remaining question is whether surgeons adopt it at scale, which its public record does not yet show.
Augmedit and the EIC have not been asked for comment for this article. It is based entirely on public records and published statements, linked throughout.
