Delta Cygni Labs and the EIC Accelerator: Real-Time Links for Mines

30 September 2026792 words4 min

Delta Cygni Labs, registered in Tampere in 2013 and led by founder and chief executive Sauli Kiviranta, makes XRTC, software that speeds up and stabilises data transmission over unreliable networks so that machines can be operated remotely in real time, as well as the POINTR augmented reality remote-support app. Its roots go back to 2008 work with VTT, Thales Alenia Space and the European Space Agency on maintenance for the International Space Station. Its EIC Accelerator project, XRTC, receives an EU contribution of €2,262,530 and runs from September 2024 to February 2027, according to CORDIS. It aims to optimise and validate XRTC technically and commercially for mining, energy and maritime customers.

In the first ten months, the report says, the company moved its backend from Java to .NET, cutting processing delay to 6 milliseconds at the 95th percentile and data transmission to within 20 to 30 milliseconds of the network baseline over long distances, "surpassing the original target"; tests stayed stable at up to 10% packet loss, according to CORDIS. It claims that where the industry benchmark allows remote operation over 1,000 kilometres at 1,000 ms delay, XRTC reaches 10,000 kilometres at 300 ms. Validation with customers comes later in the project.

Where Delta Cygni Labs Stands Now

The Finnish register shows revenue of €647,000 in 2021, falling to €149,000 in 2025, down 47.5% on the year, with an operating loss of €267,000 and staff of 11, up by seven, according to Asiakastieto. The equity ratio was 70%. No equity round, EIC Fund investment or named XRTC customer has been announced since the award.

The record

From space maintenance research to industrial data links

Delta Cygni Labs rebuilt its XRTC data-transmission backend during the first EIC period and beat its latency target in tests. Its revenue fell in 2025.

"With XRTC, we've achieved that same magnitude of improvement in transport of data for resilience, speed, and efficiency."

The Technology: Keeping Data Flowing on Bad Networks

Remote operation of mining machines or ships depends on data arriving quickly and in order, which breaks down when networks drop packets, the EIC report says. XRTC is a TCP-based transport layer tuned for low delay under heavy loss, with dynamic rate adjustment and packet sizing to avoid stalls. The company tested it on a network emulator simulating harsh industrial conditions.

The claim

Remote operation reach, company comparison

Delta Cygni Labs says the industry benchmark allows remote operation over 1,000 km at 1,000 ms delay, while XRTC reached 10,000 km at 300 ms in its tests.

What the EIC Award Promised, and What the Record Shows

The project runs to February 2027, so it is too early to judge it. Technical targets were exceeded in lab conditions. Commercial validation, the other half of the project, has not produced announced customers, and the company's revenue went down, not up, during the project.

The Money

The EIC grant is roughly 15 times the company's 2025 revenue. The award was blended finance; no EIC Fund investment has been announced.

The accounts

Revenue and operating result

Delta Cygni Labs' revenue fell from €647,000 in 2021 to €149,000 in 2025, and it made an operating loss of €267,000 in 2025.

What Cannot Be Checked

Questions for the EIC

Which industrial customers are validating XRTC, whether the EIC Fund invested, why revenue fell in 2025, and how the company will finance itself after the grant are not public.

Why Europe Should Care

Remote and autonomous operation of heavy machinery is a growing need in European mining, energy and shipping, and the EIC report frames XRTC as a European alternative for resilient real-time links. Its value depends on industrial buyers adopting it.

What the award promised

A validated, industrial-grade low-latency transport layer with market expansion.

What the record shows

Targets beaten in tests; revenue falling, no new customers public.

The Verdict

Faster tech, shrinking sales

Delta Cygni Labs made XRTC faster. The business around it has not yet grown.
