DigiFarm and the EIC Accelerator: Mapping Every Field From Space

29 September 2026872 words5 min

Farm subsidies, crop insurance and precision farming all need accurate maps of where each field begins and ends. DigiFarm, a company founded in 2020 in Hamar, Norway, uses AI to sharpen free satellite imagery and automatically draw field boundaries, including for the small fields that make up most of the world's farmland.

The European Innovation Council granted €1,767,500 towards a €2.53 million project, CropCloud. By its end in May 2024 DigiFarm reported 94% accuracy across pilot regions, 3.5 million field boundaries delivered and clients including Bayer Crop Science, KWS and Yara. In January 2026 Frontera X Technologies completed its acquisition of DigiFarm, which by then counted more than 60 enterprise clients in over 30 countries.

Where DigiFarm Stands Today

DigiFarm now operates under Frontera X's DERIVED brand, which the company describes as "the application layer for Earth intelligence". It says "DigiFarm's leadership, team, and operations continue unchanged" and that all client contracts remain in place. It cites more than 750 million hectares processed for over 60 enterprise clients in more than 30 countries, and plans to expand into agricultural insurance, EU deforestation regulation compliance, US Department of Agriculture programmes and commodity verification. The terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. Its last accounts in the Brønnøysund Register, for 2024, show revenue of NOK 21.4 million and a net loss of NOK 2.0 million.

The traction

Clients at the end of the project and at the sale

Corporate clients receiving field boundaries by May 2024 (CORDIS) and enterprise clients cited at the January 2026 acquisition, with countries covered.

The Technology: Sharper Pictures From Free Satellites

DigiFarm says small fields "couldn't be reliably monitored using public satellite data alone", so its AI turns free imagery into high-resolution data and then delineates fields automatically. The company says "83% of the world's agricultural field boundaries are smaller than 2 hectares". According to the CORDIS report, CropCloud reached "0.94 IoU metrics, i.e. 94% across all pilot regions" in 11 countries, 12 to 15% better than existing solutions, and cut field digitisation cost by 99% against manual methods.

"DigiFarm's leadership, team, and operations continue unchanged. All existing client contracts, commercial agreements, and projects remain in place."

What the EIC Project Promised, and What CORDIS Shows

The EIC project

The EU paid 70% of a €2.53M project

CropCloud ran from June 2022 to May 2024. The award was blended finance.

CORDIS project 190112197. Values in € millions.

What Has Happened Since the Award

The record

From field boundaries to an acquisition

DigiFarm used the EIC project to sharpen and sell its satellite field-boundary maps, and was bought by Frontera X in January 2026.

The Money

The award was blended finance; we found no EIC Fund investment. DigiFarm's 2024 revenue of NOK 21.4 million came with a comparatively small loss of NOK 2.0 million. The acquisition price was not disclosed.

What cannot be checked

What Frontera X paid, who Frontera X's owners are, and whether any EIC equity was involved are not public in the sources we used.

Why Europe Should Care

DigiFarm turned EU-funded free satellite data into a commercial product with real clients, and counted agencies in Lithuania and Austria among its clients; its blog also lists a European Commission parcel delineation study. The EIC grant supported it at the stage when accuracy and first sales were being proven.

What the project promised

The world's most accurate field boundaries from satellite data.

What the record shows

94% accuracy, big-name clients, 750M hectares processed, NOK 21.4M revenue and an acquisition.

The Verdict

Delivered, grew, sold

According to CORDIS and DigiFarm, CropCloud met its technical goal and turned it into sales with major agricultural companies. DigiFarm then grew and was acquired, and says its team stays in place. On the reported figures it reads as an EIC success story, though the sale price is private.
