Lindhe Xtend and the EIC Accelerator: A Liner Still Not on Sale

30 September 2026941 words5 min

Lindhe Xtend, a prosthetics company in Halmstad, Sweden, sells prosthetic feet and adapters and is led by CEO Jessika Broström. Its EIC project was Xtend U, a liner that sits between the stump and the prosthetic socket. The company said its three layers, including a washable material that "can absorb up to 1000% of its weight in water", would cut the relative humidity around the stump by half and reduce "chafing, blisters, sores and infections", according to CORDIS.

The European Innovation Council granted €1,646,117 towards a €2.35 million project from January 2023 to December 2025. When it announced the award, Lindhe Xtend said the liner "expects to reach the market in 2025", according to its news page. The final report says a clinical study at Sahlgrenska University Hospital found that Xtend U "significantly reduced skin-liner humidity compared to conventional liners" with no safety concerns, and that production was ready to scale. It also says "full TRL8 with one year of sales was not reached". The company's product pages still list only feet and adapters.

Where Lindhe Xtend Stands Now

The company's recent news is about its existing products. In January 2026 it launched the Xtend Foot Fri, with US reimbursement codes approved. In September 2025 it became a preferred supplier to Eqwal, and in February 2026 Veomedical became its distributor in Germany. In September 2026 it exhibited at the AOPA assembly in Las Vegas. No launch date for Xtend U has been announced.

The record

A cooler prosthetic liner that has not reached the market

Lindhe Xtend said in 2023 that its Xtend U liner would reach the market in 2025. The EIC project ended in December 2025 with a successful clinical study but without sales.

"While full TRL8 with one year of sales was not reached, the project established a solid technical, clinical and manufacturing foundation for rapid transition to market."

Lindhe Xtend, final report to the EIC

The Technology: A Liner That Breathes

The report describes heat and moisture building up inside the socket as the problem. Xtend U has a breathable compression sock against the skin, a super-absorbent middle layer and an outer layer that grips the socket and carries loads. The report says mechanical tests showed performance "in line with conventional liner materials" and that the team developed a reliable way to measure humidity at the skin.

The claim

Relative humidity around the stump, conventional liner = 100

Lindhe Xtend's EIC application said Xtend U halves the relative humidity around the stump. The clinical study reported a significant reduction without a published figure.

What the EIC Project Promised, and What CORDIS Shows

The EIC project

The EU paid 70% of a €2.35M project

Xtend U ran from January 2023 to December 2025. CORDIS lists it as closed.

CORDIS project 190163665. Values in € millions.

The project was meant to refine the liner, validate it, prepare it for regulatory approval and bring it to market. The design, clinical study and serial production documentation were finished. Market launch and a year of sales, the project's own end goal, were not reached. The report lists large-scale production capacity, market access and regulatory support as still needed. CORDIS lists the project as closed.

The Money

The parent company's turnover more than doubled from SEK 8.4 million in 2021 to SEK 19.2 million in 2025, but it lost money every year, most in 2025 at SEK 16.2 million, according to allabolag.se. The group lost SEK 26.8 million in 2025. Whether the EIC's possible equity component was ever paid has not been announced.

What Cannot Be Checked

Questions for the EIC

How much humidity Xtend U removed in the Sahlgrenska study, when it will go on sale, whether it has regulatory clearance and whether the EIC Fund invested are not public.

Why Europe Should Care

Heat and sweat inside the socket are, in the report's words, "one of the most frequent challenges for prosthetic users", and the company says a drier liner would let users wear their prosthetics for longer. The EIC paid for a clinically tested fix from a small European maker. Users will benefit only when it is sold.

What the project promised

A market-ready liner that halves humidity around the stump, on sale from 2025.

What the record shows

A hospital study reported to have reduced humidity, a production design, no sales and growing company losses.

The Verdict

Tested in hospital, missing in shops

Lindhe Xtend's final report says a hospital study found Xtend U reduced skin-liner humidity, but the step the EIC was paying to accelerate, getting it on the market, did not happen within the project.
