Reverion and the EIC Accelerator: Fuel Cell Power Plants at Scale
Reverion, based in Eresing near Munich and led by CEO and co-founder Stephan Herrmann, builds power plants around reversible solid oxide fuel cells that turn gas into electricity and, in reverse, turn surplus electricity into hydrogen or methane. Its EIC project promised a patented system design that would achieve "80% electrical efficiency for power generation and an even higher efficiency in electrolysis mode", according to CORDIS. Reverion does not make the cells; it buys them and designs the system around them.
The European Innovation Council granted €2,497,688 towards a €3.57 million project from February 2023 to April 2025. The final report says Reverion scaled its technology to 100 kW, built "a first-of-its-kind pilot plant" and validated it at a biogas plant, reaching TRL 8, and set up suppliers for series production. In September 2026 it closed a $175 million Series B led by Kembara, with the EIC Fund among existing investors, and said seven plants were in regular operation at customer sites.

Where Reverion Stands Now
Reverion says output per unit has been upgraded to 500 kW, its commercial pipeline exceeds $2 billion in revenue potential, and its first international projects are due later in 2026. Most of the Series B will go into a new German factory with 250 megawatts of annual capacity, ten times its current level, and up to 800 jobs. It is now pitching its plants to data centres that face grid connection delays. In August 2026 it announced a fuel cell supply partnership with Doosan Fuel Cell, and it was nominated for the German Future Prize 2026, according to its news page.
The record
From biogas pilot to a $175 million Series B
Reverion validated its first reversible fuel cell plant during the EIC project, then raised a Series A with the EIC Fund, won an Innovation Fund grant and closed a Series B in September 2026.

CORDIS and Reverion press releases.
"With seven commercial plants operating in the field and output per unit upgraded to 500 kW, this capital ensures we can rapidly clear our backlog and steer the company toward long-term profitability."
Felix Fischer, COO and co-founder, Reverion, September 2026The Technology: A Power Plant That Runs Backwards
Conventional biogas plants burn gas in engines at around 40% electrical efficiency, Reverion says. Its plants convert gas electrochemically without combustion, capture the CO₂ in pure form, and can switch within a minute to electrolysis mode to store surplus grid power as gas. With biogas as fuel, the captured CO₂ is biogenic and the plant is carbon-negative in operation, the company says.
The claim
Electrical efficiency: promised, measured and conventional
The EIC application promised 80% electrical efficiency. Reverion reports 74.2% measured in live customer operation with pre-series units. It puts conventional biogas engines at around 40%.

What the EIC Project Promised, and What CORDIS Shows
The EIC project
The EU paid 70% of a €3.6M project
The project ran from February 2023 to April 2025. CORDIS lists it as closed.
CORDIS project 190141008. Values in € millions.
The project promised a field-ready reversible plant with record efficiency. The report documents a 100 kW plant built, commissioned and operated at a biogas site at TRL 8, and a supply chain for series production. The efficiency Reverion now reports from customer operation, 74.2%, is below the 80% in the application, though it still claims a world record for a thermal power plant. CORDIS lists the project as closed.

The Money
Reverion raised a $62 million Series A in September 2024, including non-dilutive funding, led by Energy Impact Partners with Honda and the EIC Fund. In March 2025 it won €19.5 million from the EU Innovation Fund for its RESILIENCE production project, according to the company. New Series B investors include Allianz and KfW Capital. Revenue, the size of the EIC Fund's stake and the split between equity and non-dilutive money in the Series A are not public.

Reverion's announced equity rounds in US dollars
Series A (2024) included non-dilutive funding, per the company. Earlier rounds were announced in euros: over €7M in 2022 including grants and prize money, and €8.5M in 2023.

What Cannot Be Checked
Questions for the EIC
How much the EIC Fund invested, what Reverion earns from its seven plants, how much of its $2 billion pipeline is contracted, and why the measured efficiency is below the figure in the application are not public.
Why Europe Should Care
Dispatchable clean power that can also store energy addresses a central problem of grids with more wind and solar. Reverion builds it in Germany and has signed a fuel cell supply partnership with Doosan Fuel Cell. EU money has backed it at three stages, through the EIC grant, the EIC Fund and the Innovation Fund, and private investors have followed at scale.
What the project promised
A field-validated reversible fuel cell plant at 80% electrical efficiency, ready for series production.
What the record shows
A TRL 8 plant, seven customer plants at 74.2% efficiency as reported by Reverion, and $237 million in announced rounds since 2024.
The Verdict
Delivered and scaling
Reverion did what the EIC paid for and is now building a factory. Its headline efficiency is lower than promised, and its revenue remains undisclosed.
