Sequentia Biotech and the EIC Accelerator: Microbiome Software
Sequentia Biotech, a Barcelona bioinformatics company founded in 2013, says it has completed more than 800 data analysis projects for clients in 63 countries. With EU money it built MICK, a platform that analyses microbiome sequencing data automatically and gives doctors recommendations without any coding.
The European Innovation Council granted €2,156,682 towards a €3.08 million project that ran from September 2022 to February 2025. In September 2024 Sequentia raised €10 million led by Seventure Partners with the EIC Fund. In April 2026 its gut pathogen module, MICK Clinical, received a CE-IVD mark under the EU's In Vitro Diagnostic Regulation.

Where Sequentia Stands Today
Spanish register data compiled by Empresia show Sequentia active with 25 employees, annual sales above €2.5 million and capital increases in July 2024, August and September 2025 and May 2026. In May 2025 it announced a partnership with BatchX, a cloud platform for running bioinformatics tools, and in 2026 it published an analytical validation of AIR, its RNA sequencing analysis software. It has not named hospitals that use MICK Clinical in routine care.
The evidence
Two sets of accuracy figures for the pathogen module
The EIC project report and the April 2026 certification announcement give different figures for detecting gastrointestinal infections; the second was validated at Vall d'Hebron University Hospital.

The Technology: Reading the Gut From Sequencing Data
According to the CORDIS report, MICK is "the first platform to offer real-time, automated microbiome analysis, providing evidence-based recommendations for personalized patient care". The project profiled dysbiosis, an imbalance of gut microbes, in line with clinical guidelines, ran pilot studies with hospitals and validated the pathogen detection module to IVDR standards. The certified MICK Clinical is software that screens sequencing data for gastrointestinal bacterial pathogens; it was validated at Vall d'Hebron University Hospital in Barcelona.
"This CE-IVD achievement marks a critical transition from innovation to clinical adoption."

The EIC project
The EU paid 70% of a €3.08M project
MICK ran from September 2022 to February 2025. The award was blended finance.
CORDIS project 190195702. Values in € millions.
The project promised a "translational microbiome platform". CORDIS reports ISO 13485 implemented, IVDR technical documentation and risk analysis completed, and a pathogen module with "96.2% sensitivity and 100% specificity in validation". The certification announcement gives lower figures, 91.7% sensitivity and 99.5% specificity; neither source explains the difference.

What Has Happened Since the Award
The record
From bioinformatics services to a certified diagnostic
Sequentia built its MICK microbiome platform during the EIC project, raised €10M with the EIC Fund and won a CE-IVD mark for its gut pathogen module.

The Money
The award was blended finance, and the EIC Fund co-invested in the September 2024 Series A of €10 million led by Seventure Partners. The split between the two investors is not public. The CEO said at the time that the money would "accelerate adoption of MICK globally".
What cannot be checked
How much of Sequentia's revenue comes from MICK rather than its service business, which hospitals pay for MICK Clinical and the EIC Fund's stake are not public.
Why Europe Should Care
Diagnostic software sold in the EU must be certified under the In Vitro Diagnostic Regulation. Sequentia received EIC grant and equity funding and has since won that certification, moving from a bioinformatics service company to the maker of a certified diagnostic product.
What the project promised
A translational microbiome platform for clinical use.
What the record shows
A CE-IVD-marked pathogen module, €10M raised with the EIC Fund and a 25-person company.
The Verdict
Certified, now it must sell
According to CORDIS, Sequentia delivered what the EIC funded, and its gut pathogen module is now CE-IVD certified. What it has not yet shown is hospitals using MICK Clinical routinely, and its two sets of accuracy figures need explaining.
