Toopi Organics and the EIC Accelerator: Turning Urine Into Farm Inputs
Toopi Organics, founded in 2019 in the Gironde, collects human urine, removes heavy metals and other unwanted compounds, and ferments it with bacteria into biostimulants, products that help crops take up nutrients and are sold to farmers as partial substitutes for mineral fertiliser. It was selected in the EIC Accelerator's June 2023 cut-off with blended finance and received an EU grant of €2.40 million for Toopi-Regen, a €3.42 million project from January 2024 to December 2025 to "scale this closed-loop regenerative agricultural model across Europe", with deployment planned in Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain, Portugal and Italy by 2027, according to CORDIS.
The only public report, for 2024, says Toopi improved the consistency of urine collected in buildings, ran "several field trials" in Europe in the spring and autumn that gave "valuable preliminary insights", and began market studies whose key analyses were to be completed in 2025, according to the CORDIS reporting page. It lists "addressing regulatory challenges" among the next steps. The project has ended without a public final report, and Toopi has announced no launch in the six target countries.

Where Toopi Organics Stands Now
Toopi produces at a site in the Gironde and sells in Belgium through a partnership with the SCAM cooperative, whose farmers "have been using our solutions for several years", according to its website. It says that since it started it has avoided 6,000 tonnes of CO2 equivalent, saved 9,600 cubic metres of drinking water and diverted 11,000 cubic metres of wastewater. Its losses rose from €0.70 million in 2021 to €3.63 million in 2024, according to the French ratios dataset; its revenue is filed confidentially. Changes to its management were registered in August and December 2025, according to BODACC.
The record
From urine collection to farm products
Toopi won market authorisation for its first urine-based biostimulant in 2023 and ran field trials across Europe in 2024 with EIC support. The project has ended without a public final report.

Toopi Organics, first periodic report to the EICThe Technology: Closing the Nutrient Loop
Europe uses 18 million tonnes of mineral fertiliser a year, the report says, while urine, rich in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, is flushed away with drinking water. Toopi's patented fermentation turns stabilised urine into a culture medium for bacteria useful to crops. The company says its products increase photosynthesis and plant defences and improve soil life; its own report calls the 2024 field results "preliminary".
The scale
Drinking water saved: cumulative so far against the yearly target
Toopi says its collection has saved 9,600 cubic metres of drinking water since it began. Its 2027 target of 2 million litres of urine a year corresponds, by its own figures, to 24,000 cubic metres of drinking water a year.

What the EIC Award Promised, and What the Record Shows
The award aimed to spread Toopi's model across Europe. After the first year it had field trial data and partial market studies. In 2023 it had set a goal of processing 2 million litres of urine a year by 2027 and of opening plants in Gironde and Belgium, according to Échos Judiciaires Girondins, and of deploying its products on 600,000 hectares by 2027, according to AgTechNavigator. Its Belgian presence runs through a cooperative rather than a plant.

The Money
The EU covered 70% of the project. In September 2023 Toopi closed an €11 million Series A led by the Singapore fund VisVires New Protein, plus about €5 million from ADEME and Bpifrance. Whether the EIC Fund invested under the blended award has not been announced, and no new round has been announced since.

What Cannot Be Checked
Questions for the EIC
Whether the EIC Fund invested, what the field trials showed, how much urine Toopi now processes, what its revenue is and why its management changed in 2025 are not public.
Why Europe Should Care
Europe wants to cut its dependence on mineral fertilisers and the pollution they cause. Recovering nutrients from urine addresses both. The scale Toopi reaches will show whether the idea works economically.
What the award promised
A closed-loop urine-to-farm system scaled across six European countries by 2027.
What the record shows
Field trials, a French site, Belgian sales through a cooperative and rising losses.
The Verdict
Still local
Toopi turned a novel idea into sold products, and the EIC funded trials to spread them. The European roll-out has not yet happened in public view.
