VesselSens and the EIC Accelerator: A Smart Stent That Stalled

29 September 2026901 words5 min

Stents keep narrowed leg arteries open, but they can clog again, a problem called restenosis that the EIC project put at about 23% of cases within six years. VesselSens, a Bonn company registered in 2020, designed StentGuard: a "smart therapeutic monitoring device" meant to detect restenosis early and non-invasively. The project said about 3.5 million stents are implanted worldwide every year.

The European Innovation Council granted €2,500,000 towards a project titled "Clinical validation of the First Implantable Sensor System for Wireless detection of stent occlusion", with a €11.3 million budget, running from October 2022 to July 2025. According to the CORDIS report, the team optimised the design, software and biological safety tests but was still awaiting ethics approval for animal studies it had applied for in late 2023, and said "we still require a lot of capital to push our solution through the regulatory process". On 30 January 2026 the Bonn local court appointed a provisional insolvency administrator, according to official notices; by May 2026 the company was listed in liquidation.

What Happened to VesselSens

In July 2025, as the project ended, the EIC's own community site reported that VesselSens was looking for a lead investor to start due diligence that "could unlock €11.3 million" of co-investment from the EIC Fund and the European Investment Bank, and that its patents had been independently valued at €21 million. Chief executive Alexej Domnich called its selection for the MedTech Innovator Asia Pacific programme "a powerful catalyst for global expansion". Six months later the court appointed a provisional administrator. No investor or buyer has been announced.

The record

A clinical validation project that never reached patients

VesselSens ended its EIC project still waiting to start animal tests, had no lead investor announced and had a provisional insolvency administrator appointed in 2026.

The Technology: A Stent That Reports on Itself

The report describes the final geometry and delivery system, a diagnostic algorithm using the NASCET criteria, to be delivered "as an approved and compiled library" inside a cloud-based web service, and biological safety tests under ISO 10993-1 needed before animal work. The project framed the market as peripheral artery disease, which it said affects 237 million people worldwide.

"During the EIC-funded project phase, we also expanded and enforced our strong IP portfolio, which has now been independently valued at €21 million."

What the EIC Project Promised, and What CORDIS Shows

The EIC project

The EU paid 22% of an €11.3M project

StentGuard ran from October 2022 to July 2025. The award was grant-first.

CORDIS project 190107486. Values in € millions.

The project's title promised clinical validation. By its end the device had not been tested in animals, let alone people: the ethics application for animal studies was still pending. The report ends by saying the company still needed "a lot of capital" to get through the regulatory process.

The Money

The EIC grant covered 22% of the project budget; VesselSens was to raise the rest. The register shows its share capital last increased in June 2023. The EIC Fund and EIB money it hoped to unlock required a private lead investor; no announcement shows it finding one.

In € millions. The EIC Fund and EIB co-investment depended on a private lead investor; none was announced. The IP value is the company's own independent valuation.

What Is Not Known

Questions for the EIC

How much of the €2.5 million grant was paid, why a project titled clinical validation ended without animal tests, and what happens to the patents in the liquidation are not public.

Why Europe Should Care

The EIC funded a Bonn medtech to validate a new kind of implant in patients. The company did not get that far; no lead investor was announced to release further EU equity, and it is now listed in liquidation.

What the project promised

Clinical validation of the first implantable sensor for wireless detection of stent blockage.

What the record shows

Design and lab safety work, no animal or human studies, no lead investor announced, and a provisional insolvency administrator in 2026.

The Verdict

Validation promised, not begun by project end

StentGuard's EIC project ended far short of its title. The company's hopes rested on a lead investor who would unlock €11.3 million more of EU money; none was announced, and a provisional insolvency administrator was appointed six months later.
